Using Decomposed Granite

If you want to make a walkway, driveway, patio, trail or kennel run for your dog, think about making it out of decomposed granite. Decomposed gravel is very easy to use and if laid correctly, will add a touch of personality or style to your home.

Decomposed gravel comes in different shades of gray or tan. It can be as small as sand, which is used to brush between things to as big as a quarter of an inch. Using a mixture of different sizes when laying decomposed gravel will help the mixture to pack well and look better. If you live in a place where it rains or an area where water builds up, you might reconsider using decomposed granite, and this is something commercial estate agents may tell you . However, if you are dead set on using decomposed granite, make sure to mix it with other things such as a stabilizer or resin.

If you choose to use stabilizer, be forewarned that you will probably need to replace or repair this within 7-10 years due to erosion. If you use resin, the length of time between repairs will extend to approximately 15 years.

Using stabilizer or resin mixed in with the decomposed granite will give it a more packed appearance. If you are using this on a level surface or are using edging, it will help to hold the decomposed granite in place. If the area where you are using the decomposed granite is used often or are doing a driveway, it is best to choose the resin instead of the stabilizer.

Last but not least, you need to make sure that the color you choose – either a shade of gray or tan – matches the exterior of your home. That way, it blends in and looks much better. If you have a big project, it might be best to get an estimate from a company who knows what they are doing, since unskilled hands may be able to do the small projects but will probably make a mess of the larger jobs.
