How to Avoid Gaping V-neckline

May 26th, 2011 posted by admin

I was at a store purchasing some plastic packaging for some things I wanted to safely store away when I notice a woman in the line who had on a blouse with a gaping V-neckline.

Now gaping V-necklines are unattractive, sloppy even. Before you purchase a garment with a V-neckline, make sure you try it on to ensure the neckline falls smoothly. Women who are more top-heavy and with a larger bust often risk getting V-necklines that gape and pucker. So it is important to try things on to ensure proper fit.

Sometimes, a gaping neckline can be avoided by improving your posture and straightening and smoothing the garment’s excess fabric along your shoulders.

Proper, custom fit can be achieved with custom made garments. As most of us cannot afford bespoke clothes from European tailors, breaking out the sewing machine is another way to get better fitting clothes.

Patterns, though, may need to be altered to better flatter you. To change a store-bought pattern’s neckline, make the neckline shorter so you don’t risk the garment falling away from the body and causing a loose neckline that can reveal too much cleavage. Draw your desired neckline, then cut it carefully. Next, make a temporary, 1cm dart starting from the center of the underarm to the center of the neckline. That’s it!

If you have a garment that already has a gaping V-neckline, you can fix it by lifting the front of the bodice at the shoulder area near the neck to remove excess fabric. You will also need to taper the armhole and alter the neckline so it falls smoothly. <
