Don’t Work Too Hard

If someone would have magically appeared from the future while I was sitting in my bedroom playing computer-games, and said “You will end up a workaholic. I had five minutes spare in my time-travelling duties and just felt compelled to tell you that,” I would have said, “OK–so aside from bending the rules of time and space and scaring the life out of me and being compelled–what are you doing in my room?”

The conversation would have probably ended abruptly with my parents hearing the heated argument and ejecting the man (quite rightly) from my room, but it would doubtless have had an effect on me (aside from disturbing me). I may have enjoyed myself more, to make up for all the time I would later spend working–

Over-working is what the following post is about. Check it out and see if you feel the same.

Of course, over-working can’t be a good thing, but it’s tough. As soon as you are self-employed the clock starts to tick after all. And the odd thing is this: if you think your boss drove a hard bargain, asking you to do over-time, wait until you work for yourself. Unless you are very strange I think you will discover that actually, you will be much harder on yourself than any boss could be (apart from maybe Alan Sugar, who I would never want as my boss, not ever!)

So what’s the answer? Who knows. Humans just always want more and are never satisfied with however much they have. It’s a tragic thing about us, but it’s also good. It gives us purpose. Most importantly we can support ourselves, which isn’t too bad either.
